Excerpts from 1960 "The Classification of Artifacts in Archaeology"
Mode
| By the term MODE is meant any standard concept or custom which governs the behavior of the artisan of a community, which they hand down from generation to generation, and which may spread from community to community over considerable distances. p.313.
|
Analytic Classification:
| attempts to read the modes through artifacts and focuses on these attributes and through them, attempts to get the standards, concepts and customs themselves. p.313.
|
Taxonomic classification:
| is instead concerned with those attributes which indicate types. The attributes indicative of types must be chosen for their cultural significance. In this case of example we use the technique of incision rather as a criterion for taxonomic classification rather than the attribute of incised line. p.315
